Alpha male stag beetles use their big pincers to protect the females and fight for the right to mate. The less masculine gamma male stag beetles use pheromones to attract the alpha males to them. After the alpha male wastes his sperm on the gamma male, he becomes uninterested in the females. The gamma male then fertilizes the males, with no interference from the alpha males.5
