Why do you have kids?

I was talking to a Chinese friend of mine today. She's a student at University of Canberra. She said she would live in Australia to study for another 3-4 years, after which she would return to China. "l made up my mind, even l will have much harder life back to china,my parents have only one child,l have to go back." Her statement got me thinking: what are kids for? Some people might say that we have kids so that there's someone to take care of us in our old age. This is quite a selfish view, one that people of many cultures and societies subscribe to.

According to Science, we most definitely should have kids, but why should we have kids? To carry on our family's legacy (genetic) and to help carry on humanity's legacy. You will most likely benefit too along the way, but that is secondary. We live in a time when people kick back and relax once they reach their 60's. We all feel a great deal of entitlement to everything: social security, pensions, freedom, privacy, choice, etc. And many people get their priorities wrong. What is secondary becomes primary and what is primary takes a back seat.

Ask yourself these questions and challenge yourself to find answers that align with Science.
